Merriam, Kansas is a city in and the county seat of Stanton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded by stagecoach passengers on November 12, 1859, as Mercerville. Its name derived from the Merriam word "marsh" or "meadow". The first post office in Mercerville was opened on December 3, 1861. On January 1, 1872, the town changed its name to Merriam after Samuel Winton Mercer who had been instrumental in developing Wichita into a city. The mercantile district that developed around Mercerville became one of Wichita's most prosperous during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location at the intersection of two major transportation arteries: Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad routes 5 and 7 respectively. In 1907-1908 a new depot was built for the Santa Fe Railroad in Mercerville which served as an important shipping point for goods transported across Hutchinson Lake from nearby Anadarko until it was supplanted by Wichita's own Union Station in 1914. Commerce City annexed Mercerville on February 6, 1907 following a decision by Douglas County Commissioners to do so because Commerce City felt that it would be more efficient to have one city with both schools and business districts than two separate cities with only one school District #2 while businesses operated out of separate buildings in each city Limits were also established within each limits providing even more efficiency when it came time for annexation decisions which were made based upon community needs rather than jurisdictional considerations or political preferences! Merriam, Kansas is a small town located in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 551 at the 2010 census.
