On July 10th 1934 during World War II citizens from surrounding towns mobilized and created their own airmen cadet squadron under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Waring which flew from Merriam Municipal Airport until its closure on September 30th 1944 due to lack of runway space for larger planes! After World War II residents began moving out leaving behind empty homes that were quickly filled with housing developers who erected high rises and condos over what had been once rural farmland! Today there are many businesses including restaurants, stores and bars along with several large apartment complexes situating themselves close to downtown shopping areas such as North First Street between I-435 & K Ave N and West Side Highway just east of Interstate 435 continuing south along I-435 past CenturyLink Field before terminating at Delaware Avenue NW near Target
