After World War I ended, merriman declined slightly until it regained some of its growth during the 1920s when more businesses arrived and new housing became available on Main Street. During the late 1920s through early 1930s merriman experienced several waves of civic activity which led to both political change and economic growth: first came a move away from agriculture towards industry; then came an increase in education opportunities within local schools; finally came an influx of people from other parts ofKansas into town which helped spur another period of growth during these years characterized by increasing employment opportunities within town limits as well as increased tourism throughout central Kansas."
Merriam, Kansas was founded on November 7, 1867. The town was named for General James Merriam who served as Chief of Staff in the Union army during the American Civil War.
