A post office called Merriam was established in 1859, and the population increased to 350 by 1870. In 1871, a new courthouse was built and the name changed to Merriam Courthouse and Prison. A fire destroyed much of the town on July 6, 1886; however, it did not destroy all of it as some buildings were repaired or rebuilt. The construction of an electric company line near Byersville gave rise to speculation that this might have been caused by lightning which had struck Merriam but no damage had been done thereto. On October 15th 1890 local farmers organized themselves into what became known as the Cotton Ginners' Union because they wanted more control over prices for cotton ginned goods sold into Wichita marketplaces. This group successfully campaigned for passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act which led to greater regulation of business practices by trusts such as Standard Oil Company
