Merriam, Kansas is a town in Barton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Barton County. The first post office in Merriam was established on July 7, 1882. It was moved to its present location in 1903. The townsite had been platted by John A. Ladd and his wife Emma on November 15, 1881. It was named for Rufus merriman who had come to this area from Hartford, Connecticut in 1867. The first store in Merriam was operated by Cyrus Hargrave and J.P. Beale from 1886-1887; it closed about 1890 due to lack of customers or competition from other stores near by (the first store built in this area). The second store opened on December 21, 1889 at 9th and Elm Streets and continued operation until it closed also on December 21, 1893 because of financial difficulties brought on by the Panic of 1893. A post office called Granville was established on February 14, 1892 but failed to take off and was discontinued two weeks later; it reopened on March 2nd with mail service provided by Stagecoach Lines out of Topeka run through Newton Grove; this business lasted until May 8th when Stagecoach stopped running services due to new regulations put into effect at that time requiring all traveling coaches carrying passengers over 25 pounds (11 kg) to have a doctor aboard who could certify that the passenger did not have any serious medical conditions which would prevent them from travelling; this caused a great deal of inconvenience as many people were unable or unwilling to travel without their physician present Merriam passed through several name changes before becoming its current name: Merriam Township (1902), Millard County (1903), Barton County (1905), and finally Merriam Township again (2010). In 1906 an act became effective providing for consolidation of all local government areas within Barton County so that more efficient operations could be accomplished; however no action followed as consolidation proved impossible due to political infighting between different factions within the county government In 1913 an act became effective establishing Sedgwick Municipal District No 5 which included most of present day Barton County including parts of Millard and Sedgwick Counties as well as a small portion of Haskell County ; this district served dual purposes as both an emergency ambulance service provider during World War I while also helping provide schools with teachers during the war years On October 1st 1920 the original dam across Clear Creek burst resulting in devastating floods which destroyed much homes along with large portions of businesses and farms within what is nowMerriam township ; although some residents were able to rebuild they were largely vacated since most housing construction took place outside the township boundaries after 1922 . In early 1951 local officials decided that enough progress had been made inside the township limits for another municipal election so voting rights were granted back to residents within Merceriandom
