The population was 8,841 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest municipality in Douglas County after Wichita. The community began as a small settlement near present-day Merriam and developed into an agricultural center around 1885 when land east of the river was purchased by J.P. The original name for Merriam was Gillettville after John Gillett, one of two men to donate 160 acres (62 hectares) to what would become Merriam in 1886 as part of a gift from George Armstrong Custer's widow Lucy Armstrong Custer to promote white settlement in what would later becomeKansas Territory. The other man to give land, Elijah Whitehead, donated 240 acres (100 hectares). A post office called Gillettville was established in 1888, but changed its name to Beecher City in 1893 due to objections from residents who felt that Beecher had been given more credit than other towns on account of its location on Missouri River bed which made it easy for goods and passengers to be transported across their territory without crossing into Indian Territory or Mexico In 1907–08 Wm Mifflin published a travel guidebook entitled "Jerusalem: A Tourist's Guide" which included images and descriptions of Beecher City landmarks such as "The White House" which served as both home base for president Grover Cleveland during his time as governor (1897–1901), and also became known as headquarters for United States Cavalry General James Fenton during World War I because many American soldiers were quartered there while fighting on the Western Front Once 300 miles (500 kilometers) long Interstate 84 stretched through much of eastern Kansas before being built concurrent with US Highway 64 bypassing Lawrence completely in 2001 Interstate 80 fully bypassed Lawrence prior to that date Demographics according to 2010 census[1] - In 2000 there were 11 people per 1,000 inhabitants; however this number decreased steadily over time until 2005 when it reached 7 per 1,000 Accordingthousands live today within commuting distance onlyof metropolitan area jobs located elsewhere; however retail employment remains significant with several large local businesses including KFC/McDonalds reporting annual sales exceeding $100 million
Merriam, Kansas was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian tribes in 1844. The town was named after Samuel H. Merriam, a U.S. congressman from Nebraska who was also on the American Mission to China in 1842-43. The town developed as a trading post between the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes and other traders until it became an agricultural center in the late 19th century. In 1907, Merriam became the capital of the now defunct Kansas Territory.
