Merriam, Kansas is a small town in northwest Kansas located on the Missouri River. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The area that now Merriam was part of Shawnee County until 1823 when it was organized as Osage County by James K. Polk and others as a result of the Treaty of Council Bluffs ending the American Civil War. The first settler in what is now Merriam was John Pritchard who purchased land from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in 1837. He built a log cabin near present-day Anadarko which he named "Merrim". Pritchard died in 1838 and his wife, Mary, continued to live there until her death in 1865. In 1854, Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 280 acres (120 hectares) around present-day Anadarko from Pritchard's widow for $5 per acreraised. He renamed it Fort Morton after General Winfield Scott'sold army fort at Alexandria, Virginia during the Mexican–American War. Forrest used this property to build an artillery range and other military installations includingOak Ridge Arsenal which became one of America's most famous arsenal complexes during World War I. In 1886, David Darnell Waddell donated 640 acres (240 hectares) east of Anadarko to the government for use as a training ground for cavalry officers new to US service before their deployment into Mexico City during Chaco Canyon Conflict Waddell also donated land south of Anadarko to become White Sands National Monument which has included much rolling rural Landfill today known as Waddell Valley Park while also hosting nearby Merriam Municipal Airport serving Wichita, Topeka and Sedgwick counties

Merriam, Kansas is located in the Midwestern United States and was founded in 1867 by Ommer C. Merriam. The town was named for him because of his work on a farm there. The first post office in the town was established in 1870. In 1902, the town changed its name to Merriam after J.P. Merriam, an early settler and politician in the area. The town has experienced a number of different name changes over the years, but it always retains itsroots as a small farming community with a strong agricultural heritage. The townsite that now makes up part of Merriam was first surveyed by George Armstrong Custer during his service as an officer with the 1st Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War. After the war, some settlers began to arrive in what is now Merriam and they soon started to build homes. The first post office was established in 1867, and by 1881, there were five stores and two blacksmiths operating withinMerriam limits. By 1900, however, only one store remained open while all other business had closed down due to consolidation among local banks or bankruptcycies among farmers who could not afford to keep up with new technological advances brought about by railroad development across their region at that time such as irrigation systems and telephone service which made farming more efficient and profitable than ever before. In 1902, when J.P MERRIAM moved from Wichita Falls TX to Mercia KS he purchased land east of present day Mercy Street between 2nd Street South and 3rd Street North which lay mostly still wooded until recently due to deforestation caused by hunting for deer over many years prior (there are several reports dating back decades that mention hunters hiking through this area). This land ultimately became known as MERRIAM STREET where today most residents live including those who farmed here prior to 2002 when Mercia reverted back its original name back to MERRIAM after voting overwhelmingly in an election held at large having been authorized by state legislature under section 571a of Kansas statutes governing change of names within cities (the statute provides towns with no referendum rights). The vote occurred despite efforts from some residents who felt thatMERRIAM should have retained its previous name even though merciful had become largely irrelevant since merciful street ran parallel directly south side of merriman square shopping center opposite bank) .
