Merriam was founded in 1867 by John Merriam and his wife, Emma. The town was named after the family's farmlands in Massachusetts. In 1870, the town had a population of only seven people. By 1880, it had grown to nineteen people and became an agricultural center with a large hogshead corn mill. The mill closed in 1907 but the town continued to grow as a cotton farming community. In 1951, Merriam was annexed by Topeka and ceased to exist as an independent municipality.
