The city is named after Francis Merriam, an American lawyer and politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1907 to 1913. The first settler in what became Merriam was John Haggerty in 1836. He platted what would become Merriam on land that he had purchased from the USFS for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). A post office called "Merrill" was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1845, David Davenport founded Davenport City on the east side of present-daymerrillville square across from Fort Dodge Barracks. In 1848, he donated land to the Shawnee Nation for their new capital on the site where present-day Wichita now stands. The name "Davenport" reverted to "Merrill" when Wichita became an incorporated city in 1901. A school district called Merrill Normal School District No 1 was organized on November 5th, 1902 by order of Admiralty Court Judge Charles Blythe under Act Of Congress No 3161 entitled: An Act To Establish A Normal School District In The Town Of Merrill And Effectually Closure thereof Which Was Unlawfully Intended And Failed To Take effect On July 1st 1902 By reason Thereof . . . erton Ewing took over as Superintendent September 7th 1912 upon recommendation of Dr Fenton Wolski who resigned effective date due to ill health; finally Mrs Lillian Hershman took over effective date October 15th 1912 after being recommended by Dr Wolski and continuing service until her death on December 2nd 1952Mrs Lillian Hershman

Merriam was a small town in Kearney County, Kansas, United States for most of its history. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Merriam was James Waddell, who arrived in 1854. He built the first frame house in what is now the town. Waddell also founded the first store in what is now Merriam. In 1858, John Gentry settled on a farm northeast of Merriam and opened a general store there. Gentry also served as postmaster from 1858 to 1860. In 1861, Alvin Aisch settled near present-day Wichita and opened a grocery business there. Aisch later became one of the largest stockholders and directors of Western Union Telegraph Company, which helped foundation Wichita's early industrial development (see Wichita Business History). In 1865, Jethro Meeks set up shop in an old adobe building near Central School on Main Street in what is today downtown Merriam. Meeks ran this business until his death in 1902; it then passed through several hands before being bought by Harry Kappelmeyer in 1922 and reopened as Kappelmeyer's Place restaurant/bars on Main Street beginning July 1, 1923 under that name; it closed December 2nd 1984 due to fire damage suffered during tornado outbreak that week (See Wichita History). In 1870, Abbott & Laughlin constructed a flour mill on Clear Creek just east of present-day Meridianville; this mill continued operation until 1907 when it began producing coal products instead. The last batch of flour shipped from Clear Creek came downriver to Lawrence viathe Cimarron River Bridge on October 11th 1907( See Lawrence Local History)). On January 3rd 1912, Cyrus Vance established Vance Oil Corporation off Highway 7 south of Topeka with an initial investment of $8 million dollars from Standard Oil Corporation president John D Rockefeller Jr.; production started June 30th 1913( See Topeka Local History)). By 1935 Wiley Post had merged with General Electric Company to form Midland Electric Corp., making Vance Oil Corp., alone again among American oil companies (See Midland Electric Corp.). Today there are still some remnants left from those days including VanceOilCorp.'s headquarters Building located at 6201 North Keystone Road across street from ExxonMobil Corporate Headquarters - see map below) Merriam experienced growth following World War I and Prohibition because many farmers needed to get their product out into the marketplaces where they could find buyers rationing goods due to wartime shortages
Merriam was founded in 1854 by John Merriam, the grandson of a settler. The town was named for John's father, Samuel Merriam. In 1871, the first school was built and in 1903, the first post office opened. The town grew rapidly during the early 20th century and by 1920, it had over 100 residents. However, during World War II, Merriam suffered as a result of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war, population growth slowed and by 1970, only 10 residents lived in town. However, due to steady economic growth over recent years,Merriam has experienced significant population growth since 2000.
