Merriam is a small town in Wyandotte County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,090 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The Merriam post office was established in 1868 and closed in 1935. The village of Merriam began as an agricultural community on the east side of current-day Haskell City. A post office was established at Merriam in 1868, and remained open until 1935. The first settlers were Isaac Searing and his family, who arrived from New England in 1867. They built a log cabin near present-day Haskell City on the south side of the Missouri River. By 1870, they had acquired land northward to what is now Merriam Village and founded a new settlement thereon. They named their new village after Professor John Leland (1796–1866), a professor at Columbia University who had visited them during their tour of western Kansas that year. In 1876, Captain John Darnall arrived with his wagon train from Kansas City and set up camp southeast of Haskell City on what is now Box Elder Road. He discovered gold deposits near Beloit and began selling goods he collected to miners throughout the region; by 1880, he had amassed some $10 million worth of gold Nuggets! In 1886, when Territorial Governor James McKinney passed an act authorizing residents to vote for members of Congress within their county boundaries – as required by state law – many people voted for Darnall because he represented their interests locally rather than those of Wichita or Topeka (the other two largest towns within Wyandotte County). Darnall became one of Wyandotte County's most successful entrepreneurs; his company mined coal along the Missouri River until it went out OFFLINE in 1903 due to bankruptcies among its owners; he also operated a flour mill that produced high-quality bread products until it closed in 1914; later still he developed several water systems for local farmers before retiring at age 90 in 1947! longest continuous resident living inside city limits!) ?Captain John Darnall (1886-)
