The first permanent settler in what is now Merriam was J.P. Stephenson in 1876. The town was organized on February 14, 1881 by a group of farmers who had gathered to organize their community after hearing about it from a friend. The name of the town honor member and benefactor Lyman Prentiss (1824-1912). The town began as a small farming community with just a few buildings and no public services when it became home to Wichita State University in 1923. With Wichita State's growth came new housing developments and job opportunities for local residents which led to more people moving into the area that included Merriam. In 1954, Wichita State merged with Missouri State University and Merriam annexed part of the campus which made it one of the largest university towns inKS at the time. In recent years,Merriam has been known for its agricultural products such as corn, soybeans and wheat; its retail businesses including several grocery stores and two convenience stores; and its annual Pumpkinfest which features carolling from local churches throughout late October

Merriam, Kansas is a small town located in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1854 and named for Amos Merriam. It became a townsite in 1865 and has since grown to include a post office, two churches, a school, and over fifty businesses. The primary industry of the town until the early 21st century was agriculture; however, this has also changed with the opening of several new businesses in recent years that focus on health care, manufacturing, and other services. The history of Merriam begins with some of the earliest settlers who arrived in what is now Sedgwick County in 1854. Amos Merriam brought his family to what is now Merriam Township on July 3rd of that year. The original land which would become part of the town was donated by Senator John Jumper to serve as an agricultural township limits extending from north to south side of Arkansas River. On September 12th of that year only twenty-six people traveled into what would become Sedgwick County from Missouri under General James Hays to purchase 640 acres (24 ha) east of present day Burlington Cemetery for $2 per acre ($60 per hectare). This initial group consisted mostly farmers and their families who had been driven out of their homes by war or disease when Kansas became a territory following Texas annexation. The first post office opened in 1861 under name “New Madrid” after New Madrid County seat in Kentucky where many settlers had come looking for opportunities during the Civil War era. One notable resident was Davenport native Elijah Howe who served as Postmaster from 1861-1865 before moving on to found his own business - First National Bank - just outside modern day Wichita Falls TX at that time. In addition to its role as an important node along Route 66 during these years it also functioned as one stop on stagecoaches traveling between Topeka & Manhattan while passengers were passing through present day Wichita Falls TX en route back home or seeking supplies needed for their farmsteads or ranching operations close by including cattle drives servicing both sides Of the Arkansas River which took place every week beginning May 16th thru October 8th each year... This period marked also significant change within both society and economy due to increased transportation costs associated with wagon trains carrying goods all over western US via Stagecoach Country which crossed country between Independence Valley & Kansas City becoming increasingly difficult (& expensive) To navigate due largely to lack thereof any sort markings other than well known landmarks such as forks crossing Arkansas River (Ft Douglas), etc...& numerous small rivers leading off into different counties make routing much more challenging today! In 1865 when Sedgwick County formed outgrowths westward from Hutchinson no longer being able to provide enough residents/ livelihoods
