Merriam, Kansas is a town in Sherman County, Kansas, United States. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler in Merriam was George Fitzhugh who arrived in 1854. A post office was established in 1856, and the name was changed to Merriam in 1887. The first store built in the town was called "Pioneer Store." The town had a school from its inception until 1907 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1911, the first telephone line ran through town and merriam became one of the few towns in Sherman County to have a electric light bulb. Merriam has several churches including First Baptist Church which was founded on December 15th, 1889 by Reverend Samuel Purdy and Drury Bledsoe after they both converted to Christianity from their previous pagan religions. Second Baptist Churches were also founded soon afterwards with Revs Leland Moody and James Witherspoon officiating at their services. There are also Methodist Episcopal churches as well as an Unitarian church that opened up shop on Main Street about 1922-1923 under leadership of Nellie Gentry Woodard. One of the most notable landmarks in Merriam is Stroud Elementary School which opened its doors on August 29th 1948 as one of only two schools open for students grades K-5 within walking distance of each other across Main Street and State Avenue (now I-70). It served as a model for many subsequent elementary schools throughout Wichita during the postwar period before closing its doors permanently around 1984 following multiple budget cuts by then Mayor Layton Turner administration which led to high levels of crime rates within the community especially among minority youth who would often become involved with drugs or gangs instead of attending school full time
Merriam, Kansas was founded in 1867 by John G. Merriam and his wife, Susie. The town was named for the meridian that bisects the Kansas-Oklahoma state line. The first post office in Merriam opened in 1868. In 1907, the town incorporated as a city. In 1949, the city annexed the unincorporated community of Westborough.
