Merriam, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The most recent census estimate for Merriam was 1,693. The community is named after Dr. John A. Merriam and his wife Alma Ladd who donated land to the town in 1909. The first settler in what is now Merriam was J.W. Swartz and his family who arrived in 1856 from Illinois via the Missouri River east of present-day Topeka. One of the siblings of J.W., Solomon Swartz (1858-1952), married local girl Eliza Burt (1859-1921). Five children were born to Solomon and Eliza: Hiram Hargrave (1860-1910), Chiquita Burt (1862-1922), John Arthur Hargrave (1864-1945), Virgil Allen Hargrave (1867-1920) and Minnie Belle Hargrave (1869-1945). In 1908 a group of seven landowners donated 2 million acres to build an agricultural township with a post office, schoolhouse and other services on it which would eventually becomeMerriam Township. On November 15th 1909, Drs John A Merriam and Alma Ladd donated their entire section of rural land that lay east of Topeka between Interstate 40 & US 69/71 to form Merriam Township along with adjoining Clearwater Township; these donations became effective on November 16th 1909 when they were recorded in the Shawnee County courthouse book as "Merriman". The early years were difficult for settlers because there was little growth due to lack of irrigation water brought by canal upriver from nearby wheat fields or by ox carts carrying water downriver on long trips during dry seasons RAILROADING WAS NOT POSSIBLE IN THESE TIMES SO THE MAIN SOURCES OF WATER FOR SOWING AND FARMING WAS FROM ENERGY FLOWS DOWNRIVER FROM THE ROCKIES MERRIAM TOWN CAME INTO BEING ON NOVEMBER 16TH OF 1889 WHEN THE SHAWNEE COUNTY COUNCIL BOOK RECORDED THIS DOGE AND WILLIAM MOSS FOUNDATION AS MERRIMAN AFTER HIS FAMILY NAME SWARTZ

Merriam, Kansas was settled in 1854 by men from Illinois. The town was named for Samuel Merriam, a landowner in the area. The first permanent settlers were the Hennepin County Land Company, which bought 640 acres of land east of present-day Wichita on the Arkansas River. The company formed a town committee to plat and name the town. On May 8, 1855, the settlement became an official community when it was included in the Kaw Cherokee Indian Treaty. The first post office was established in 1857 and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first school was built in 1861 and remains open today as Merriam Elementary School. In 1865, Kansas Territory formed and Merriam became part of that territory. It experienced some economic growth during this time with lumber production reaching $1 million by 1890. However, World War I led to a severe decline in agricultural production and job losses for many local farmers; however, mercantile activity continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s thanks to new transportation methods such as air travel and trucking. In 1938, after years of debate over whether or not to annex Oklahoma into Kansas, Merriam voted to become an official city within that state; however, annexation never happened because Oklahoma overruled Kansas’ vote on this issue (see also: “Oklahoma Annexation: A History”). subsequently annexed by Wichita on December 1st 1959 effective immediately following passage of Kansascity Act No 594 which granted cities special taxing authority related to services they provide within their boundaries without having any voting rights therein (see also: “Kansas City Annexation – History”). Today most people living within spitting distance of downtown Wichita call themselves "Kaw"ites while those living north/west of downtown Wichita are known as "Pawnees". As an incorporated city with its own police department and fire protection systemMerriam enjoyed some unique benefits compared to other towns located within similar boundaries at that time including free library materials delivered daily through mail service (now e-mail), streetlights being extinguished at night during cold winter months so drivers wouldn't get lost driving around aimlessly at night (!), no sales tax (due largely to lack thereof elsewhere due to prohibition)*, exclusive use of municipally owned streetlights* (* exception made for emergency services purposes only) - even when other municipalities elect not do so! merrimack@aol
Merriam, Kansas was founded by the Merriam family in 1867. The town of Merriam was platted in 1868, and it was named for John A. Merriam, a lawyer and judge who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1872, the town became part of Topeka County, Kansas. In 1902, the U.S. Post Office in Merriam changed its name to Topeka after Topeka County was created from parts of Keokuk and Sedgwick counties. In 1916, Topeka became the capital of Kansas when Republican Gov. James Buchanan moved the state government from Lawrence to Topeka. In 1933, Topeka merged with Newton (later Wichita) County to form Wichita County Probate Court District No. 2; this district served all of Wichita County except for central corridors which were served by Newton District No. 1 until that date. In 1966, WichitaCounty erected a new courthouse on State Avenue in downtown Topeka; this building is now used as the county administration building..
