Merriam, Kansas is a small town in southeastern Kansas that has been established since 1854. The town was named after linguist Samuel P. Merriam and his wife, Mary L. Dodge. The first post office in the town was opened in 1855. The population of the town was 3 when it became a city in 1907. It has since grown to over 21,000 people and is the most populous municipality within the US state of Kansas. The history of Merriam begins with two pioneers, John Davenport and Isaac Norris, who arrived in 1824 on horseback from Illinois and founded what is now Wichita County,Kansas on the San Miguel River east of present-day Topeka. In 1854, Samuel P. Merriam purchased land east of Wichita for $1 per acre and began to build a home thereon known as "Merriam House". He soon outgrew this home and relocated to what is now downtown Merriam where he erected a second home which served as his primary residence until his death in 1908. Hiswife Mary L. Dodge continued to live at "Merriam House" until her death in 1913; it then reverted back to Samuel's heirs until it was sold by them to the City of Topeka in 1916 for use as an airport hangar until its demolition in 1961). In 1907, Topeka became an independent city located on the southwest corner of 6th Street between State Street (now Douglass Boulevard) and Main Street (now 5th Street), just north of downtown Wichita proper which had been burned during Wichita's suppression of black citizens' rights following their arrests while protesting white supremacy during Sherman's American Civil War era occupation (see also: Topeka Controversy ).
