Merriam, Kansas is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Merriam was Levi Bowen on May 3rd, 1854. John Gentry and his family arrived in 1857 and started a ranch there. Many other settlers followed over the years including: Hosea Mixon, Abram Sayers, Isaac Newton, James Crouch and others. In 1907 the Merriam post office was established and remained in operation until it closed on July 15th, 1969. In 1907–1911 there were two banking institutions in town- one dry goods store and one grocery store operated by J R Gooding & Sons (a large departmental grocer) while Postmaster E L Godfrey ran a mail service from his home which served many small towns in the area until 1912 when he discontinued operations due to lack of customers or funding for a new building. A community hall/pool hall opened on Main Street in 1915 but it burned down within months; this event is widely considered to be the first time that anything significant happened within town limits since its inception as an agricultural outpost during the early days of Wichita growth). Ida Boice began marketing groceries out of her home starting in 1922 after she moved from Topeka where she had been general manager for Hutchinson's grocery store chain before that company went out of business several years earlier. After Ida's death her husband Roy Boice took over management from him beginning with their second store open on West Third Street which opened November 16th 1951 becoming Wichita's oldest continuously operating retail establishment still in business today! A post office called "Merriman" was established at this location on December 12th 1893 under direction of Colonel Samuel Proctor USMCR who lived near present day Ankeny where he had purchased land for what became Wichita’s first city limits! The name changed to "Merriam" sometime prior to 1901 when territorial authorities determined that “Kansas City” would be more commonly known throughout Indian Territory so accordingly they changed all localities therein to conform! As mentioned earlier many people located here either worked or raised families during early 20th century farming/ ranching era making Merriman an important center both socially and economically!!! Today some very interesting artifacts remain traceable back to those pioneer days including items such as Pioneer Homesteaders Diary dated November 10th 1854 which measures 5x7 inches overall (now missing pages), Heifer wagon built by Levi Bowen circa 1860 measuring 57x14 inches total; also 2 pioneer saddles dating back to around 1870 are among various items currently housed at Clearwater Ranch State Historical Park along side pioneer tools used by these early settlers including plows etc... Some residents have even taken up collecting old newspapers & other historic memorabilia both inside & outside their homes particularly during special events such as 4-H meets held here annually!!!
