Merriam is a town in western Kansas, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Topeka–Athletic Conference (TAC) city of Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area. The TAC has a total population of 9,527. The first settler in what became Merriam was James Kizer in 1855. He and his family named their farm "Kizer," after their father, John Kizer. A post office was established at Merriam on November 1, 1860, and remained in operation until it closed on January 8, 1903. In 1871 Merriam had two schools: one for white children and one for black children. In 1881 the school board voted to build a new school which would become known as Park School; it opened September 6th of that year. The building still stands today and is used as the town library. The first fire Department arrived in Merriam on October 7, 1886 with six men from Topeka Territory Volunteer Fire Department #1 under the command of Captain Elisha Silliker. On October 10Captain Arthur Wacker organized an all-merriman brigade composed of nine companies from Topeka Territorial Militia battalion #2 with headquarters at Wacker's home which had been donated by Mrs Wacker to serve as Battalion Headquarters during this time frame also! At this time there were no electric lights or water treatment plants so fires were put out with hoses that ran through neighborhoods into these small townsfolk' homes! On December 51887 when Indians attacked white settlers near Wellston they responded by raiding homes killing four people includinging James Kizer's wife Susannah who was pregnant with their only child then age 10 months old! This event led to retaliatory raids by whites against Indian villages throughout Indian Territory causing over 100 fatalities!!! After Summit County formed they disbanded all local volunteer fire departments effective March 151920 however some members continued converted to Municipal Light Company #2 becoming MERRIAM FUEL CO
