The town was established in 1854 and named for Colonel John Merriam of Massachusetts. It was laid out in 1857 and platted in 1858. The first post office opened in 1860. In 1870, the community built its first school. A courthouse and jail were constructed in 1892 and 1893, respectively. In 1902, the first electric lights were installed in the town. In 1942 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and all but one building within Merriam were destroyed; this building still remains standing as a historical landmark today. The two-story school house from 1850 remained standing until it burned down in 1951; it has since been rebuilt as a home addition to nearby Lenexa. The economy of Merriam has relied primarily on agriculture for most of its history; however, recent growth has come from manufacturing such as printing paper products and electronic equipment._ There are now several retail stores located within the boundaries of Merriam while also developing new businesses that have arisen over time such as M&M'sLabs which produces candy bars made with maltitol sugar alternative sweeteners free from added flavors or addictive chemicals_
