Merriam, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town's history can be traced back to 1854 when Merriam was founded by David and Anna Smith. The Smiths were farmers who moved from Illinois to what is now parts of Topeka and Lawrence County in 1854. They named their new settlement after Samuel Morse, an American inventor and surveyor who had died two years earlier. In 1857, the Smiths sold their land to Isaac Noland, a developer with interests in coalmining and railways. Noland laid down a railroad track through the village in 1860 and named it Merriam after his family's home in Massachusetts. In 1870, David Ridges bought land adjacent to Noland's railroad tracks and began construction on what would become Merriam Park. Over time, Ridges added important buildings such as a courthouse and schoolhouse to his park: Today, most of these structures are still standing. In 1907, Merriam became part of Douglas County when that county was created from portions of Topeka and Lawrence counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it incorporated under its present name. The growth of Douglas County led to mergers among its constituent communities: In 1979, Merriam merged with Topeka; in 1984, it merged with Wichita; and finally in 1987 it became one entity with all its current boundaries – including parts of Bedford County – when those towns joined Douglas County proper (alongside Osawatomie). The rapid expansion ofDouglas County has resulted in increased traffic congestion on local streets: As recently as 2007–08 only 50% of local businesses could serve customers within 100 feet (30 m) radius of their doors because there was no room for additional parked cars along main arterial routes or near business parks or schools%. To overcome this challenge, Douglas County has embarked upon several initiatives such as the development of expressways that allow faster access into the town limits for motorists wishing to enter or exitMerrimack Valley Shopping Center or K-Mart Supercenter without stopping at any other destinations; installation of looping bike paths around key business districts; development by private developers of large open space areas which have been turned into shopping malls complete with restaurants/bars/etc.; and establishment by county government officials as marketing locations for events such as sporting matches or agricultural displays
On October 1, 1907, the first town in Merriam was organized. The name of the town was chosen because it is one hundred miles from Topeka and seventy-five miles from Kansas City. The townsite was surveyed by James H. Moore and named for Professor Samuel Morse. The first post office in Merriam was established on November 5, 1907. Merriam had a population of sixty-three people when it became part of the Topeka Union School District on January 1, 1912. On July 15, 1916, merriman incorporated as a city with a population of one hundred thirty-eight people. It merged with Wichita on February 17, 1921 to form Wichita-Merriman City Corporation. In 1929 the city lost its charter and reverted to its original name: Merriam.
