In 1870, the town had a population of 56 people and it became an unincorporated community. The first county courthouse was constructed in 1872 and served until 1907. In 1903, the name of the town was changed to honor Samuel Hance Merriam, who had been governor of Kansas from 1897 to 1901 under Ulysses S. Grant's administration. Samuel Hance Merriam (1839-1917), also known as "Sandy" or "Sam," was a brother of Gershom Hance Merriam (1820-1892), one of the founders of Geary County; he also founded Canadian Tire Corporation and many other businesses including Omaha World-Herald Publishing Company Limited., which still operates as a subsidiary today with its headquarters located near downtown Omaha. The original post office building still stands on Main Street within the limits of present day MERRIAM; it has been used for various purposes over the years including housing, retail use, storage/laboratories etc.. A new post office building opened adjacent to this building on Railroad Avenue in 1984; due to fire damage done by a tornado that struck nearby that year, most of what once occupied this building has now been replaced by shops or residences onsite however some parts such as the original lobby remain visible behind newer construction). mail service continues through Barton Post Office which is located several miles east across Reno Road outside Dodge City proper
