The town was named after Professor John A. Merriam (1851-1925), an American scientist who researched plant growth and development. The original building housed grades 7-12 until 1959 when it was replaced by the current structure which seats around 350 students inside and out including 100 girls who attend School for Advanced Studies. The administration offices are located on First Street across from Park Avenue High School while classrooms are located on Maple Avenue off of South Main Street near the library/cafeteria complex that also includes an gymnasium/residence hall/parking garage/. Merriam, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by Abram Merriam and his family. The first school in the town was built in 1881. The town post office was established in 1882. In 1907, the name of the town changed from Abram to Merriam after General George Custer's death. The community of Hastingsville developed near the intersection of U.S. Route 66 and State Road 6W about east of present-day Merriam. About 1908, a group of investors led by John Pomeroy organized a general store on what is now Main Street in Hastingsville and called it "Pomeroy's Mercantile." By 1912, most residents had moved to Merriam and Hastingsville became extinct as an incorporated settlement. In 1916, when World War I began, Merriam joined Sedgwick County and received its own Post Office Committee which set up mail service between Hutchinson and Seneca Falls (then part of Lawrence County). On October 11th 1916, mail service between Hutchinson and Seneca Falls resumed with new stamps that were introduced that year entitled "America First". The first boxcarload (and possibly only) of American postage stamps arrived at Hutchison on October 19th 1916 from Omaha Beach where American forces had landed just days earlier during World War I as part of Operation Overlord; these souvenirs are still extant within the Hutchison Historical Museum today! In 1919–1920 there was a severe drought which caused many crops to fail including haystack corn that yielded 3 bushels per acre; some people attribute this problem to bad weather conditions preceding World War I while others claim it may have been due to overpumping on local water supplies resulting from increased production based upon artificial irrigation throughout much of Kansas during this time period following similar patterns across much agricultural country during this era also known as “The Great Plains Grain Boom” although actual crop yields did not reach those levels until well into the next decade
