Ammunition has been a part of life in Merriam, Kansas for over 150 years. In 1892, the first Powder House was built in this town to store and sell powder and shot. The following year, the first salt lick mine opened here and produced salt for use in munitions. By 1903, ammunition production had increased enough that a new Powder House was built on Third Street. This building continued to be used until 1942 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1907, the Kansas State Rifle Association (KSRA) was founded here in Merriam and soon began purchasing local ammunition stores for their members’ use. In 1912, KSRA established its own manufacturing plant to produce rifle cartridges and other firearms items. Over time various other state organizations joined KSRA including the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which became an affiliate member in 1966; and the Sporting Arms Manufacturers’ Institute (SAMI) in 1990. Merriam is a town in Kearney County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka-Council Bluffs-Westville, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Merriam was Jethro Coston in 1854. He and his family had to leave their home because of the Dakota War. The first post office in Merriam was established in 1857. The name for the town came from Samuel Morse's daughter Mercy who named it after her father's home county of Massachusetts. The first school in Merriam was a one room schoolhouse built near the intersection of Main and Osborne Streets in 1858. The building served as a school until 1912 when it burned down. It was replaced by a new building which opened on September 12, 1916 which still serves as the town hall today. As per the US Census Bureau,Merriam has a total area of , all land.

In 1881, Merriam was a small town of about fifty residents. It was located in what is now Geary County, Kansas. In 1907, the town had a population of 2,500.Merriam's history began in 1881 when settlers from Illinois arrived in the area and started to build homesteads. The first post office was established in 1882, and by 1886, the town had a store and two churches. By 1908, Merriam had a school and two hotels. The local railroad served as the town's main source of income until it was discontinued in 1959. The community built its first church on Main Street in 1884. A second church was built on Broadway Avenue in 1889. The first pastor of both churches was Revs John Waddell and Jno Hinson. In 1914, Revs James Ewing and Lewis May also became pastors of respective churches at this time. Over time, other ministers have been appointed to serve as pastors including Revs Harry Barnes (1924-29), Burt Post (1930-36), Rufus Clements (1937-41), Earle Judd (1942-46), Clarence Goodyear (1947-51) and Floyd Kapp (1954-58). Merriam experienced some growth during World War II with the construction of RAF Bomber Command Flight Training School No 6 which operated from nearby Topeka from 1942 until 1945; however there were no civilian casualties due to this activity as all aircraft flew over military airspace without any contact with civilians or any damage done to property or people
