Merriam, Kansas is a small town in Hutchinson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settler inmertrated Merriam Township in 1872. In 1907, a post office called Merriam was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1963. In 1900, Alfred Larkin founded the First National Bank of Merriam with $5 worth of money he had earned working as an express messenger for the Kansas Pacific Railroad. In 1951, Harry Hargrave became the first African American to be elected Mayor of Merriam when he won against incumbent A.J. Cooke by 6 votes to 1%. Hargrave served two terms ending on January 3, 1957 and January 3, 1961 before retiring from politics effective that date. The old firehouse which operates as a museum now stands across from Hargrave's home on Main Street. The building housed the school district's administration for many years before it was sold to Mercy Hospitality in 2002 and used as their hotel until 2013 when it reverted back to the school district's use as an administration building once againometime during 2014-2015 its ownership changed hands yet again and it currently resides at Mercy Hospitality with plans to turn it into another retail/residential complex entity known as "The MERRIAM Center".
