The Mcpherson telescope was built in 1892 by Dr. James A. McDougall, a railroad engineer and amateur astronomer. It was the first American telescope to be erected on an organized scientific basis and it remains one of the most important astronomical instruments in the United States today. The telescope is located on the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence, Kansas, and its research program has included studies of star formation, planet orbits, and lunar eclipses. The history of scopes at Mcpherson began with Dr. George Washington Hill’s observation tower in 1881. He used a simple refractor to view stars near his home in Fredericktown, Virginia. AfterHill’s death in 1883, his son John Wojtasiewicz took over his father’s observatory and continued to use a reflecting telescope for collecting data about celestial objects. In 1885 Jules Verne visited Lawrence and admired Wojtasiewicz’s work on telescopes there before building his own from scratch at Fort Leavenworth Arsenal that same year. With help from Professor Augustus De Morgan (of Oxford), Wojtasiewicz succeeded in constructing a very large telescope-the world’s first true reflector-that could be used for astrometric observations of stars near Earth.. Wojtasiewicz moved to Mcpherson in 1886 after being offered the directorateorship of the instrument laboratory at Aberdeen Polytechnic Institute but he remained active as an instructor at KU until 1902 when he retired due to ill health. His widow continued operation of their observatory until her death in 1944; thereafter it passed through various hands until it was purchased by KU again in 1961 as part of the University Libraries System . TheMcpherson Telescope Museum was founded within KU archives following its purchase . Mcpherson was founded in 1881 and named for General James McFerran. The first post office in Mcpherson was established on December 12, 1881, and served until it closed on February 14, 1888. The first settler in Mcpherson was J.T. Green which arrived on July 10, 1881. Other settlers followed in the early years including A.F Cook who arrived on September 6th,1881 According to the 2000 census there were 706 people living in Mcpherson when it was included within Wichita Township limits; however by 2008 that number had decreased to 598 due to the merging of Wichita Township with Newton Township (which also includes McAlester). As of 2010 there are 488 residents still living in Mcpherson- an increase from 392 when it became a part of Newton Township Limits

The Mcpherson family moved to present-day Wichita County, Kansas, in 1830. John and his wife Mary had two children, John A. and Catharine E., who both born in Wichita County. In 1836, theMcpherson’s decided to move again and settled at what is now Fort Riley on the Arkansas River. There they became involved with politics and government for a number of years before moving their ranching operation upriver to what is now Topeka in 1853. John A.Mcpherson was elected as a member of the Kansas State Senate from Topeka in 1861 and 1865; he served until his death in 1869. Catharine E., then serving as Mrs. John A.'s sister-in-law (and later Mrs.) won election as an unrepresented female senator fromKansas forthe first time ever in 1916 when she ran against Sam Rayburn, Jr.. She served until her death in 1951; she was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Topeka after her husband's death there three years earlier). After Catharine's death childless, her brother Phelim took over running their ranch operations until his own death at age 91 years old on March 12th 2006
The town of Mcpherson, Kansas was founded in 1873. The population of the town peaked at 500 in 1907, but has since decreased dramatically. The town is located in Johnson County and is only a few miles from the city of Topeka.
