The first school in Mcpherson was built by Mr. Eaton and operated for three years. In 1871, a new school was erected by Mrs. Eaton and classes began in October of that year. The first post office was established in Mcpherson on November 1, 1871. For many years, Mcpherson served as the county seat of Barton County. However, due to population growth within Barton County, the decision was made to move the county courthouse to Topeka in 1976. Today, Mcpherson remains a vibrant community with strong ties to its history and community members are proud to call themselves citizens of this historic town
