MCLERON, JOHN C. (1847-1925), American educator and historian John Clymer McLeron was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 12, 1847. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1870 with a degree in education. He taught school for three years before moving to Kansas City, Missouri to become an instructor at the high school there. In 1875 he moved to Mcpherson and began teaching school there. From 1886 until his death in 1925 McLeron was superintendent of schools in Shawnee County, Kansas. During his years as superintendent he played a major role in the development of Mcpherson as a community and educational center.McLeron is most famous for his work on the history of Mcpherson and its people. He published several books about this topic including The History of Shawnee County, Kansas (1900) and A History of the People of Shawnee County (1926). McCleron also served as president of the Historical Society of America from 1915 until his death in 1925.
The town of Mcpherson, Kansas was established in 1881. The population of the town peaked at around 40 in 1910, before declining gradually over the next few decades. In 1960, the town had a population of just 7 people. By 1990, the population had decreased to 2 people.
