Mcpherson, Kansas is a small town located in Mcpherson County, Kansas. The population was 1,378 at the 2010 census. The community is named after Colonel John A. Mcpherson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a United States Senator from Kansas. The town was founded in 1881 by James H. Boyd and his family. Boyd ran a general store and post office in the town until it closed its doors in 1914. From then on, the town's only industry was agriculture. In 1924, the first high school opened in Mcpherson and remains open to this day. In 1951, a local oilfield formed due to development of shale gas reserves near the town. This led to an increase in business for the local businesses which helped drive population growth over the next few decades; however, when natural gas prices declined starting around 2008 things began to change for Mcpherson again with declines in jobs and tourism as well as an increase of crime rates that have caused some residents to leave their homes (primarily because of difficult living conditions).

The history of Mcpherson, Kansas began with three men: George A. Mcpherson, James W. Hickey, and John L. Hickey. The men were farmers who moved to the area in the early 1800’s. They started a farm and raised livestock. In 1875, they became the first people to permanently settle in the area when they founded the town of Mcpherson on the side of a hill in what is now Defiance County. The town was named after George A.Mcpherson, who had come from Scotland in 1868 to help run a farm near modern-day Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1870, he and his brother-in-law James Witherspoon established a trading post at the mouth of White River which served as the center for trade between Kansas and Nebraska Territory (now Oklahoma). The two brothers also ran a sawmill and gristmill in Mcpherson until around 1880 when they sold all their assets to J.Witherspoon and moved back east to Wichita Falls where he continued running his business into the 1920s. In 1875, George A.Mcpherson married Anna Jane Hebardt at Pawnee Mission Church while she was on her way from Ft Worth, Texas to attend an auction held by her relatives thereabouts; she was then 19 years old (the oldest person ever born in Wichita Falls). She later became one of only four women licensed as veterinary nurses in Kansas during that time period; other licenses were granted to women such as Alice Palmer (1889), Clara Barton (1890), Fannie Lou Hamer (1902). After moving back east several times over ensuing decades – most notably settling down permanently in Defiance County in 1916 – George A.'s daughter Virginia came out west with her husband Harry Vail Jr., sons Jimmie Vail IV (1920-2005) and Donnie Vail III (born 1951) on Aug 2nd 1961 via airplane from Wichita Falls Airport northward across Dodge City Country Club Field onto I-40 just past Topeka into Kanzawa County about 20 miles northeast of present dayDefiance; thence by car through Montero Hills Road Bridge over Republican River & over US 84 about 10 miles southeast of present daydefiance & finally arriving safely at our home here today Saturday afternoon thru Sunday evening previous night after 5 long days flying nonstop nonstop 5 hours non stopped gassed up inside an airplane taking off from Wichita Falls AirportNorthwest United States
