Mcpherson,Kansas is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Olathe, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Mcpherson was John Mcpherson. He and his family founded the town in 1872. In 1902, the townsite was given to Harry Fenton by John and his wife Sarah (née McAlester). Harry Fenton ran a grocery store and post office there from 1902 until he died in 1927. His son-in-law, Wernher Hafer, took over running the store after father's death. The Mcpherson Post Office closed on December 31st, 1951; however, it reopened on February 1st following Wernher Hafers purchase of the business from his mother-in-law Esther Barnes. In 1955–1956, Mcpherson had its own high school which later became Central High School; it opened as a one-room schoolhouse in 1955 with six students. Central then moved to its current building in 1959 and became an all girls high school known as Park View before becoming coeducational in 1985 when Parkview Junior College merged with Central High School to form Olathe Community Schools District No 2. In 2002–2003 (the last years of Republican control of Sedgwick County), Central changed its name to Heritage Christian Academy (HCA) after then-(then) Superintendent Donny Smiths strategy for more diverse teaching options led to complaints that HCA discriminated against black students even though all other than white students were welcome at the school which was located on an Indian Reservations owned and operated farm north of town Limits; that African Americans were not able to attend dances or chapel services offered by predominantly white churches adjacent to HCA campus; that Mrs.(last name withheld) who managed HCA property did not allow African American staff members access to any part of their facilities whatsoever despite requests made by Mrs.(first name withheld); that parents objected strenuously when their childrens' hair was cut short at academy style haircuts offered by highly visible African American female employees who worked adjacent thereto during morning assemblies held pursuant generally but also exclusively for white juveniles only; finally that Mr.(last name withheld) owner/manager/director of Heritage Christian Academy refused point blank everto allow any black student enrollment or attendance whatsoever upon request either through written letters or face time with him notwithstanding assurances given orally prior thereto - this latter incident culminating into what must have been an extreme embarrassment for HSHA administrators when local reporters showed up unexpectedly one day early door coaching their young charges how they should handle such visits from 'angry old whites'); thus Heritage Christian Academy morphed into simply "Heritage" without any connection whatsoever with either original heritage christian academy or park view junior college - effectively demolishing numerous memories & traditions associated therewith among largely black alumni & friends who built those schools (& many others since). However, some businesses did survive including local grocery storeowned businesses until after 1945 when those stores closed because of competition from more accessible supermarkets chains across America during this time period known as "the Great Depression".
