In 1907, the townsite of McCool was annexed to Mcpherson; this annexation caused an increase in business activity as businesses within McCool came under one roof for the first time. The town continued to grow until 1925 when its boundaries were revised again reducing its size by almost half due to annexations from other towns throughout that year. During World War II (1939-1945), many large businesses closed because they were requisitioned for military service or became bombed out after being located near airfields such as Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport (now known as Wright Patterson Air Force Base). Many residents left during those years and few new residents arrived until after World War II ended when demand for housing increased following the end of hostilities and huge waves of refugees began arriving in west central Kansas following various wars fought around the world including World War II

In 1867, the aggressive Kansas Territory was organized. The territory was large and sparsely populated, so it needed to be managed by a centralized government in order to ensure efficient governance. The territory's first Territorial Governor, James Fenton, decided that Kansas would need a military to protect it from neighboring states. He appointed Major General George Armstrong Custer as the first Lieutenant Colonel of the Kansas Volunteer Infantry Regiment on April 6th, 1867.
