Mcpherson, Kansas is a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It was founded in 1881. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. The town of Mcpherson was platted in 1881 by J.B. Hickey and Wm. A. Sieving, both from Illinois. The first post office was established in 1882; it was renamed Mcpherson in 1902 after Hickey's death. The town became an agricultural center during the early years of its existence, with corn, wheat, and other crops supplemented by cattle and sheep farming until the late 19th century when widespread disease struck the area; this led to a decrease in population and economic activity over time which has left the community largely unchanged since then - as of 2010 it had only one store open for business and no schools or other public services available residents are dependent on their own businesses to provide most basic needs such as water, electricity, garbage removal (the towns only truckloads of trash Removal every week), healthcare (limited coverage) and limited community events that could bring people together much like they would do back when there were more people around to enjoy them

However, this decision didn’t last long because soon after, another bill was passed which made it an Illegal act to Carry A Pistol Without A License. This new law made gun ownership much more difficult and dangerous for people who wanted to own or carry a weapon in Mcpherson. As a result,gun use among the populace decreased significantly over time.

The town was founded in 1868 by Scots-Irish settlers from Ballinrobe on the banks of the Little Missouri River. They named it after James Mcpherson, an Australian fur trader who had come to America in 1847 and sold goods near the site of present-day Wichita. The first post office in Mcpherson was established in 1870. The community grew quickly and by 1880 there were over 100 residents. In 1912, when Douglas County was created, Mcpherson became one of its original townships. It lost its status as a township in 1944 when it merged with other townships within the county to form Douglas County.[2] In 2003, Mcpherson won the title of "Best Place to Live" from Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine[3].

The town of Mcpherson, Kansas was founded in 1867 by John A.Mcpherson and his wife, Emma. The settlement was located on the eastern edge of what is now Sedgwick County, Kansas. It was named for General James K.Mcpherson who fought in the American Civil War and later served as a U.S. Congressman from Kansas City, Missouri. In 1870, the first school in Mcpherson was built and operated by Mrs. McMherson and her daughters under the name of “The School House at (town’s) Headwaters” There were also some local farmsteads that rented land to teach students in early installments of this day-school system until 1893 when an additional building was erected at present day Union Elementary School which became operational on November 15th, 1892 with thirty five students enrolled to provide instruction during morning hours while afternoon sessions were conducted at home by teachers Anna Blythe Whitehorn and Martha Cookman under the auspices of parent-teacher associations organized by Mrs. McMherson herself (p280). On October 10th 1872 Mr. Jerald Hodge donated one acre for use as a public square in Mcpherson which became known as “Hodge Square” In 1876 three Model T rigs were delivered to townspeople for use as wagons for taking goods to market across the county seat at Topeka (later Wichita) so that farmers could purchase their produce fresh from the agricultural markets there instead of having it shipped in from out-of-state (KWCH 1888 p290). A post office called McphersonCountyPost Office opened on July 12th 1865 serving residents within 1/2 mile radius with mail delivered via horse or buggy to residences within 2 miles (EmmaMcPherson diary #5). In 1890 an addition east side addition was built to present day Union Elementary School adding 124 classrooms including twelve science labs along with modern facilities such as air conditioning, plumbing and heating etc.(Union Elementary school history website). The population of Mcpherson peaked around 1920 with over 1,200 people living here according to census records(Census data courtesy US Census Bureau) However due numerous natural disasters such as tornadoes that struck this area during World War II; industry dried up leaving little opportunity for employment or growth other than a few small businesses situated near main streets which gradually closed down over time until they too ultimately disappeared(KansasHistoryOnline Database interview with current owner Mr./Mrs.-Donna Ladd November 17th 2016). Today only a few scattered buildings remain standing from when this vibrant community had such strong economic development throughout much of its short life span; most notably being Union Elementary School which has been completely renovated into a state-of-the art learning environment complete with new roofing & windows since its original construction back in 1992(KWCH 1988 p290; www.kansashistoryonline.com ). The site of the present-day town of Mcpherson, Kansas was first settled in 1854 by John and Jane Childs. The town name was derived from a friends' children's names, John and Joanne. The first post office in the town was established in 1855, and it continued to be operated until 1907.
