In 1861, Daniel and his wife Anna died after a long journey from their ranch to become citizens of what is now Wichita. Their three children - John (1860-1929), Maud (1862-1943) and Marilla (1864-1945) - took over running the rancheria and also built homes on their property during this time.
The town of Mcpherson in Kansas was founded on December 3, 1867, by James W. Mcpherson and his wife Anna. The town is named after the family's farm located in that same area. The first post office was established in the town on March 4, 1868. The population of Mcpherson grew rapidly during its early years and by 1880 it had reached 100 residents. By 1890 the population had dwindled to only 10 people, but due to promotion from the neighboring city of Topeka, Mcpherson became one of Topeka's primary business districts. In 1907 local citizens voted to incorporate as a village and on January 1, 1908, Mcpherson became an official municipality with full rights to provide for its own government and police department.
