McPherson, an early settler. The first post office in Mcpherson was established on July 10, 1872. The present building was built in 1902 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a tornado in 1886. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,221 people, 479 households, and 350 families residing in the town. The population density was 54 people per square mile (21/km²). There were 513 housing units at an average density of 30 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population

Mcpherson is a small town in Gardner County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,702 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first settlers in Mcpherson were James and Anna McGillans who came to what is now Mcpherson in 1855 from Illinois. They raised crops and raised livestock until 1871 when they immigrated toKansas Territory. They started a post office here in 1875. In 1907, they built the first school west of Wichita on the site of present day Mcpherson High School which still stands today as a national historic landmark. The town was named after John McAlesney who donated land for it in 1902. In 1924, Fannie Bourgeois moved her family from Topeka to Mcpherson and started a feed store there which remains open today as the oldest continuously operating commerical grocery store west of Wichita. She also founded the FIRST Presbyterian Church in Wichita and continues to serve as its pastor today. In 1932, she opened her own general store which still stands today as one of Wichita's most popular tourist attractions known simply as "Fannie's". In 1961, she sold her business to Wacoal Incorporated which continues to operate it today as one of Wichita's largest department stores
