Mcpherson and has been inhabited since that time. The townsite was surveyed in 1881 by James Hance and named for him. The first settler in what is now Mcpherson was John D. Mcpherson who arrived from Illinois in 1881 with his family. He built a log cabin on the site where he currently lives and started a small farmstead that eventually grew to include several other buildings including a gristmill, Methodist church and schoolhouse. By 1886, John D. had recruited two others to help build his new town which they called "Mckerville". In 1889, the railroad came through and soon enough residents were trading goods with railroads all over the country! This saw Mcpherson become an important transportation center for the region as well as providing jobs for many of its citizens. Additionally, due to its location near railroads and water supplies as well as easy access to main roads throughout Clay County,Mcpherson quickly became known as one of the most prosperous communities in central Kansas during this period of growth! During World War II (1939-1945),Mcpherson played host to some of America's largest air raids when more than 100 bombers roared over the community numerous times! Many structures within town were damaged or destroyed but overall officials believe that these raids helped spawn much later development within Mcpherson such as both banks and restaurants which continue to thrive today! With so much history associated with this small town it's no wonder that it has long been popular among touristsseeking information on local landmarks, events or simply taking pictures inside its old buildings!
