The town of Mcpherson, Kansas was founded in 1867 by John H.Mcpherson. The town is named after him and his wife, Emma Gertrude McFarlane. In 1924, the town population was 910 people and it was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer. The town has a post office, three churches, a grocery store, and a few other businesses. The community has experienced some growth over the years but it remains small compared to other towns in the area. The first settlers in Mcpherson were farmers who came from nearby Topeka. They started out small and grew their land until they had a large farm that included slaves and several hundred acres of forestland. After many years of farming, they decided to move away from Topeka and start anew in what would become Mcpherson. They began building their own house on the site of their old farmstead and called it Lillie Place after one of their daughters. In 1868, when the railroad reached Mcpherson, the first train pulled into the station which consisted of two cars with passengers waiting on either side while horses pulled an engine around back to where they could disembark. At that time there were only two tracks running through Mcpherson- one going east (the current highway)and one going west (the original track). Because of this, all goods coming into town had to be unloaded at the train station before being transported downriver to Topeka or Wichita for storage or delivery later on. Only white people could buy property inMcpherson at that time so black residents generally worked as servants on local farms or took up fishing or lumbering jobs in surrounding communities until emancipation came about 25 years later when most slaves were freed overall across Kansas Territory including Mcpherson As early as 1869 John H.(McPherson) built his home at Lillie Place just south of today's intersection of Ulysses Boulevard & Indianola Avenue Over time more homes were built; some still standing today such as Mrs Sibley's House now used for apartments/motels etc., 5 houses across 2 lots (now Throckmorton Street & 1st Ave SW), 4 cottages fronting Main Street(?) all now gone except 1 cottage! Mrs Sibley ran her shop from her home these days between 3rd Ave SE & 4th Ave SE also known as "Mrs Searles' Store." Her husband Wm Mears operated another general store which opened about 1903 next door starting about NW corner 3rd Ave SE opposite Searles’S Store . Another structure burned down ca 1906- possibly due fire caused by lightning strike
