The Mcpherson Gun Parts History began in 1887 when James A. McMorris started a small store in the town of Mcpherson, Kansas. The store was located on Main Street and it was known as the "Mcpherson Arms Store." The store had four barrels and six handguns that were made of wood. In 1913, Johnnie Cochran purchased the business from James A. McMorris. From 1913 to 1922, Johnnie Cochran ran the business with his brother-in-law, Andy Slaughter. In 1922, Andy Slaughter sold the business to Harry Wessels who renamed it The Wessels Armory Company. The company produced shotguns and pistols until 1951 when it became part of Remington Arms Company.
The town of Mcpherson, Kansas was founded in 1881 by John A. McClernon. The community is located in Shawnee County, Kansas on the banks of the Arkansas River. It was named after General James McPherson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Kansas. McClernon built a log cabin at the site where he now resides and started to farm the land around it. By 1896, he had developed a small business that sold goods such as groceries and hardware to farmers in neighboring counties. In 1902, McClernon married Clara Jane Huggins and began operating his own store with her help. The couple soon became parents to four children: Donald (1904-1975), Glen (1906-1976), Betty (1908-1996), and Cindy (born 1910). In 1923, McClernon purchased an adjacent piece of land for $5 per acre and began developing it into what is today known as Mcpherson Village. He built a millinery shop, gristmill, bank, post office annexe, two churches – Stampede Baptist Church which opened in 1925 and First Methodist Church which opened in 1927 – Pioneer Cemetery - also called Newton Cemetery - Presbyterian Chapel - three schools – Third Grade School opening in 1924; Second Grade School opening in 1927; FirstGrade School opening 1930; Store & Restaurant building completed 1934; Homebuilt Industry Building completed 1939; Town Hall finished 1941; Community Center finished 1949/. Over time, many homes were added to the village including two cottages on Union Street which currently housethe Hope Library & Museum.. In 1957 there was an addition to McClernon's home which provided additional living space for his family until his death seven years later at age 95 years old.. Today there are over 100 residents within Mcpherson Village dating back to 1881 when it was founded..
