As part of Settlement No. 5 on July 20th 1861 by Isaac Newton Phelps and James Fenton (brothers) under the guidance of Major General David Hunter[1], five families were organized into two settlements on the east side of Shawnee Creek near modern day Hillcrest Springs[2]. These were known as Phelps and Fenton’sTownsite #5[3]. The official name for this original settlement was "Fenton's Townsite" until November 15th 1870 when settler George Hahn changed it to "Phelps' Townsite"[4]. John A.Mcpherson became an owner and manager of Paintsville Paper Mill within days following its establishment which commenced operations on October 10th 1871[5] with twenty-five employees including one man who operated a sawmill! At first production only went through three machines but soon began shipping finished paper products to JS&J millyards throughout Kansas City[6] & St Joseph MO also!! In 1915 construction began on what would become Mr J Smith’s Current Technical School which opened its doors September 3rd 1916 with seventy-six students!!! Today there are more than one thousand alumni living all over America!!!

The Mcpherson Massacre took place on July 26, 1871, when three Kansas farmers were killed by Native Americans. The incident is also known as the Lecompton Massacre.
