Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. Manhattan was founded in 1865 by men from Lawrence, Kansas. It became a city in 1907. Manhattan is located on the east side of the Missouri River, about 21 miles (34 km) north of Topeka and 14 miles (23 km) south of Wichita. It name comes from Englishman James Buchanan's choice for the site of his new capital City: "Mantua", meaning "tower" or "hill" in Italian and another word for a fortified stronghold or citadel. The first settler to arrive in what would become Manhattan was George Harker who came overland from Independence on July 10, 1864 with his family and livestock. He named his land Lone Hill after David Harker's home near Lebanon, Pennsylvania where he had been born two years earlier on October 12th 1837. James Buchanan chose Manhattan as the new seat of government for the newly created Indian Territory because it met all six requirements laid down by Congress: it be within 1/2 mile (0.6 km) of a major watercourse; have an easy access to trade with other parts of the country; be situated on high ground; not be subject to attack by friendly tribes living nearby; be accessible through open country between wooded hills and broad river valleys; provide ample space for military purposes; and meet these conditions so that New York City could not easily take advantage of its location as an interim capital during this time when preparations were being made for statehood under Ulysses S Grant's presidency. In 1907 Manhattan became part of Wichita when it was annexed by that city. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people with no industry or commercial enterprise other than agriculture which produced hay and corn feed for local farmers until World War II when Wichita began producing oilseed crops such as cotton and soybeans which added jobs to the economy while also providing natural gas production services to neighboring towns which are still used today including providing energy infrastructure solutions such as transmission lines and substations
