This new store became known as the "Gun Store of the Century." By 1912, the Gun Store of the Century had become one of America's leading dealers for pistols and rifles. In 1924, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Company. At this time, Soft Cases were also founded by Fred W. Smith as part of their Pistol line of products. In 1951, Soft Case Corporation changed its name to Remington Arms Corporation and began producing pump shotguns under the Remington name.Today, Remington is one of America's largest firearms manufacturers and retailers with over $500 million in sales last year alone! Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Manhattan is located on the east side of the Arkansas River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Wichita and 30 miles (48 km) south-southeast of Topeka. The first permanent settler in Manhattan was Nels Vail, who purchased land from David Brown in 1854. In 1860, John Aiken founded what became known as Aiken County after moving to the area from southeastern Missouri. In 1868, Captain James Wofford established a trading post at what is now downtown Manhattan and named it "Wichita". On July 1, 1870, Wichita incorporated as a city under the name "Manhattan". On December 12, 1886, President Grover Cleveland announced that Manhattan would become an important coal town for his new electric power plant near Topeka. Coalmining activity increased in Manhattan during this time; by 1912 there were over 100 mines operating in the town. By 1920 most of these mines had closed due to low prices for coal and competition from other towns across Kansas City and then Oklahoma City. However, some remain active today including The Linden Coal Company which operates two mine sites within walking distance of downtown Manhattan – one opened in 1984 and another just opened in 2009 – making it possible for visitors to visit these mines on foot or bike while enjoying views of downtown Wichita and surrounding mountains
