Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Manhattan is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River and includes the eastern edge of the former Wichita County. In 1871, when Wichita County was organized, it included all of what is now Johnson County and some parts of Shawnee and Osborne Counties. The town was founded by John A. Robertson in 1881 as a satellite village of Topeka. It became an incorporated place in 1886. Manhattan had a gold rush period from 1887 to 1889 but no gold ore found and no settlements were established there again until 1906 when a small community called Garden City was established adjacent to Manhattan on land that had been leased from WichitaCounty for $5 per acre (2 cents per pound). Newspapers in Manhattan during this time reported on local events such as school board meetings and city council meetings which were open to the public. Parkersville also reported on local events which took place there including baseball games between Garden City and Topeka Parksville teams In 1907, when Topeka annexed Hutchinson County, most of what is now Johnson County (excluding Garden City) became part of Topeka annexation territory along with portions of Shawnee and Osborne Counties The post office at Manhattan closed in 1951 although mail continued to be delivered through Garden City until 1959 At one time or another every other day a train passed through downtown Manhattan delivering goods such as flour, sugar, eggs, milk etc On July 14th 1909 two trains collided near present-day Midland Avenue & Downtown Streets killing six people including Robertson who had ridden one of the trains
