The city of Manhattan, Kansas was founded in 1861 by a group of farmers who left Independence, Kansas. The city became an important center for the dye industry and soon became home to a large number of garment factories. In 1919, the city experienced one of the worst explosions in its history when a munitions depot exploded.
Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Manhattan comes from a post office on Manhattan Avenue in Topeka which was established in 1887. The first settler in what became Manhattan was Wm Halsey and his family who arrived there in 1868. They were followed by others over the next several years and by 1886, all but one of the original settlers had left for unknown reasons. In 1902, J P Faragher opened a store on Main Street which soon became known as Faragher's Hardware Store because of its large stock of hardware including tools, nails and screws. Other early businesses included John Gorman's general store (established 1865), an open-air candy store built by Harry Cramer in 1897 and a hotel called the Starlite Hotel (established 1901). Most of what is now downtown Manhattan was developed between 1907 and 1915 when developers bought or leased land east of Fifth Street for use as theirtown center with plans to build schools, churches, hospitals and other public buildings. At first only single-family homes were built on these properties; later more duplexes and triplexes were added until today’s grid pattern has been maintained throughout most of downtown Manhattan’s history.

Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Osborne County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1854 byodus settlers from New Orleans and named for Manhattan on the south bank of the Missouri River. The town was originally situated on the east side of Manhattan Creek and its first courthouse was built in 1855. In 1902, Manhattan married its neighbor to the west, Osage County. The two towns merged into one in 1907 and had their first municipal election that year. In 1959, a new school district was formed out of parts of both towns and their respective schools were combined into one building. In 1984, an annex was added to the town limits making it possible for more people to live there without leaving their homes. In January 2006, an expressway connecting Osage City and Topeka failed to open as planned due to bad weather conditions; this caused a large number of businesses in both towns closure which has had a negative effect on local economy. As a result of this event, many residents decided not to move back into their homes following the 2007-2008 economic recession which made life difficult for many families struggling with high housing costs and little money available for shopping or other needs outside of home-based services
Manhattan, Kansas was a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States before the creation of the state of Kansas. The community developed around a post office and newspaper, which was first established in 1887. The community name is derived from Manhattan Beach on Long Island, New York City. The post office closed in 1954, but the paper continued to be published until 1984. In 1988, the town lost its charter and ceased to exist as an entity.
