Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is surrounded by Wichita County to the north, Haskell County to the east, Ottawa County to the south, and Sherman County to the west. Manhattan is located on Topeka's east side about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of downtown Topeka and about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Wichita. The town was founded in 1854 by John Pemberton and his wife Sarah Morse Pemberton as a result of their purchase of land from James Armstrong for $1,000. The name Manhattan was chosen because it sounded like home country England. In 1870, when Topeka became an incorporated city, Manhattan twice voted against annexation into that city; once because its leaders felt that would have increased its vulnerability to outside influences and again because they wanted more control over their own destiny within their own community rather than being subject to other municipalities'. In 1907, during World War I,[2] most all businesses in Manhattan closed due to wartime rationing; however some reopened after government surpluses were available for purchase again.[3] Post-war prosperity brought new life back into many businesses including two grocery stores opened by then-Mayor George Leedy Jr.;[4][5] two post office buildings; three hotels (the first rooming house opened in 1912);[6][7] four churches;[8][9][10] six schools including one high school which became known as "Topeka High" after becoming coeducational (1896), five grain elevators joined forces with seven others forming what eventually became " Kansas City Grain Exchange" in 1922; eleven retail stores including several department stores operated by local merchants during Prohibition years before those business closures following prohibition's repeal in 1933;[11][12][13][14] three professional services firms: Krieger & Company attorneys whose offices are now occupied by Perkins Coie LLP,[15]; Berkelius & Coopersmith Engineers who built several blocks on Water Street between Third Street and Fourth Street which served as both a commercial center for manufacturing goods exported from Topeka while also hosting numerous social events such as dances given at various hotels/restaurants throughout late 19th century until prohibition ended those activities beginning around 1920,[16]: twenty two farmsteads filed with county recorder starting around 1860 contributing about 12 acres (5 ha)[17]: these included ten or twelve buildings used for agriculture production such as hog pens/cages but no barns or other industrial facilities; only one building remains standing today used originally as a library unchanged since its construction in 1865Template:Date

Manhattan, Kansas was founded on the same day as Wichita, Kansas by Major General George Armstrong Custer and his forces after they routed a Sioux Indian force at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The town was named for Mount Carmel in present-day Israel. Manhattan rapidly grew into a small community, but it wasn't until 1881 that it became an incorporated city. In 1896, the city annexed adjacent towns of Geary and Clearwater to form a new municipality. The following year, Manhattan voted to become an independent state and its own government was set up. The town has since grown again and is now one of the most diverse cities in the country. The first settlers in Manhattan were farmers who arrived from Ohio in 1851. By 1870, there were around 100 people living in the town. The city's growth came about because of railroads which made it easier for goods to be transported between Wichita and Topeka. One reason for the railroad development was because Manhattan had been declared a dry township by Topeka County commissioners in 1865 due to lack of water supply opportunities elsewhere in the county. By 1875, there were over 300 residents living in Manhattan alone and by 1890, there were 2,000+. The rapid growth of population also led to problems that would plague future municipalities: illiteracy rates soared; child labor increased; prostitution flourished; race riots occurred frequently; land prices spiraled out of control; and crime rates skyrocketed unchecked. In 1897, when Kansas adopted a new constitution providing for separate states within the United States with their own constitutions instead of being under one federal government like before, Manhattan voted to secede from Topeka County and become an independent state with its own government entirely separate from Wichita (the original capital). This move marked another watershed moment for New York City – it had become not just home to America's largest Chinatown but also its only Incorporated City outside New York State or Connecticut! Many high-ranking officials from both nations attended ceremonies marking this event including President Grover Cleveland who noted "I am glad we have done this" while Mayor John Kelly said "This is something novel...It makes us feel that we are part of something larger." The secession process took many months as opposition began emerging within both Wichita and Topeka Counties as well as among some members of Congress (mainly those representing more populous eastern Pennsylvania) about whether or not such an extreme step should be taken without proper consideration given to possible ramifications such as economic stagnation across entire Kansas or even broader changes throughout American society which could potentially see similar developments down south if Texas secedes too! However after much debate on both sides - including significant donations from local business owners - on May 10th 1898 final approval was granted by vote margin of 8-1 with Mayor Kelly presiding over proceedings! As mayor he appointed all nine committee members who would eventually create what is now known as the “Manhattan Municipal Charter” which outlines many key municipal functions including elections/administration etc., still serving today! This act helped pave way for further incorporation into other jurisdictions across America during this time period leading up to World War I!). For years afterwards various amendments were passed increasing mayoral power etc.; until finally abolishing mayoral authority altogether on October 1st 1965 effective thus terminating any remaining vestige(s)of autonomy!?
