Manhattan, Kansas was first settled in 1854 by John S. Martin and his family. The town was named after the Dutch city of Amsterdam, which had been located in what is now Holland since the 16th century. In 1861, Manhattan became a territory of the United States and was named for the English city of Manchester. As a result, Manhattan has an English-speaking population as well as a significant German population. The first store in Manhattan was opened by G W H Smith in 1865. By 1870, there were twenty-one stores in the town. The first post office was established in 1870 and served the town until 1922. In 1936, when Kansas statehood came about, MacArthur High School became the first public high school in Manhattan. In 1961, when Kansas merged with Nebraska to become one state, all but one of the townships within that new state were combined into one municipality called Hutchinson County and their respective high schools became Hutchinson State High Schools (Hutchinson being renamed to MacArthur). The last high school closed at MacArthur in 2000; it had been used for grades 9-12 since 1945 when Hutchinsons deactivated its vocational program%. Manhattan's economy has always relied on farming; its primary crops include corn, beans and wheat. Since 1978, however, there have been efforts underway to revive downtown businesses including restoration of several historic buildings as well as development of a new mixed use/ retail district known as "Downtown Hutchinson".
