Manhattan, Kansas is a town in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. The population was 595 at the 2010 census. It was proposed to be named for Manhattan, New York City, but the town board voted against the name in 1978. The first settler in Manhattan was Nicholas Tilton in 1854. The town of Manhattan was platted in 1872 by George Prentice and A.D. Moffatt. The post office called Manhattan "a small frontier hamlet" until 1886 when it became the capital of Dodge County and received its present name from its location on Main Street between Second and Third Streets (now Eighth Street). In 1880–1881, James Fenton built a small log cabin near where he now lives on Main Street west of Broadway which served as his home until 1902 when he moved to Topeka and began farming there. In 1916–1917 Jens Rasmussen wagon loaded with goods stopped at an outbuilding on Broadway while traveling through Dodge County; this event is known as the "Rasmussen wagon stop." The first store in downtown Manhattan opened up in 1908 by Hilarion Soper under license from the Kansas State Board of Education. Originally located east of Third Street on Market Square, Soper's store continued operations even after being moved to its current location across Fourth Street from First National Bank building beginning with their merger into First National Bankshares Incorporated on December 12th 1959 as one holding company with twelve divisions including Empire Savings Bank & Trust Company (later part of Wells Fargo), Security Pacific Life Insurance Company (later part of Marsh & McLennan Companies) and Citizens Mutual Insurance Company. When Interstate 80 crossed over I-70 just north of Downtown Manhattan on US Hwy 70 about 2 miles west of Broadway Avenue the business district around that intersection effectively disappeared due to developers moving into that area outside I-80's original boundaries - what used to be Downtown Manhattan now forms much today's Midtown/Downtown Wichita area south Indian School Road east side extending all the way back to I-670 also known as Old Kansas Highway or just K street - making it difficult if not impossible for anyone other than locals or emergency responders ever again access what used once been one giant commercial center servicing not only Downtown but also Midtown Wichita (north side) and parts of Indian School Roads southern edge continuing all along Wichita River valley floor
