The first rifle Targets were created during the American Revolution and they were located on Bowling Green Road in downtown Manhattan. Shooting at these targets became popular among troops and sailors as it allowed them to practice marksmanship. From 1824 to 1865, gunners from Battery Perry on Governors Island shot at small targets near the Captains’ House. These targetmasters supervised the shooting but never collected any money for their efforts. In 1865, a new battery was constructed on Governors Island and all of the gunner's targets moved to that location. The originaltargetmasters continued to oversee the use of those targets until 1972 when they were replaced by electronic equipment Today, many people still enjoy shooting at small target puddles located around town as well as using government buildings such as Congress Hall and State Capitol Building as shooting ranges

In 1857, Manhattan, Kansas was admitted to the Union as a territory. The area that would eventually become Kansas was mostly Native American land, and the Wichita tribe had been using bows and arrows to hunt game for centuries. In 1857, when the U.S. government decided to create a federal district in what is now Kansas, it chose Manhattan as one of its initial districts. The first gun target in Manhattan was a small stone marker on West Seventeenth Street near Central Park that marked where riflemen from the Second Regiment of Infantry shot at buffalo during the 1853 territorial campaign in western Kansas. Riflemen from Company F of Second Regiment of Infantry also killed sixteen buffaloes at Fort Leavenworth on July 9th1853; this event is commemorated with a plaque at that site today. From then until 1862, rifle companies from Third Regiment of Infantry were stationed at various points along the Great Bend of the Missouri River between Topeka and Wichita; these companies became known as "the Wichita Rifles." On October 12th1862, General Halleck ordered all rifle companies within his command to be mustered into military service for three years or until they shouldered off their weapons; this order became effective on November 1st1862. From then until 1865, the Third Regiment remained garrisoned at Fort Sill (now Oklahoma State University) in Indian Territory west of Dodge City due to lack of weapons available east of Topeka. On December 3rd1865, United States troops under Colonel Robert Ewing moved into present day Wichita after defeating an Indian resistance movement led by Chief Big Foot and capturing many artifacts including guns and ammunition belonging to the Kaw Chi Bandit Agency Rangers which had fought against Ulysses S Grant’s forces during his Overland Campaigns in central Illinois throughout 1865-66
Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Shawnee and Ottawa counties and is northeast of Wichita. The first settler in what became Manhattan was James P. Hatton in 1854. He built a log cabin on a hill near where the town now stands. A post office was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1861. In 1865, Manhattan was moved to its present location due to a drought that had struck parts of the state that year. The town's name comes from Mount Washington which stood to the east of it when it was first settled. The current day Manor Road runs through downtown Manhattan and is one of only two streets remaining in Shawnee County with this name (the other being US- 81). Manhattan has been home to many businesses over the years including banks, grocery stores, grain elevators, hotels/motels and more recently technology companies such as Apple Inc., Microsoft Corp., Amazon Web Services and Facebook Inc.. The community also hosts an annual 4-day music festival called "Festivals by theFeather" which takes place during July or August each year at nearby Park Meadows Resort & Casino across from downtown Manhattan Beach

Manhattan, Kansas was founded in 1854 by the merger of two small towns - Manhattan and Topeka. The town had a population of just over 100 people when it was founded. It rapidly grew, reaching 1,000 residents by 1860. By 1870, the town had reached 3,000 residents and by 1880 it had become a US city with a population of 11,500. The growth of Manhattan came as a result of several factors. One was the discovery of oil reserves in nearby Wichita County in 1859. Another was the influx of settlers from eastern Missouri who were looking for land to settle after the Kansas-Nebraska Act granted westward expansion to the United States. As well, Manhattan became an important transportation hub because it served as both a crossroads for goods moving east and west from Kansas City and other Midwestern settlements and also as a point for shipment of agricultural products to eastern markets. During its early years, Manhattan experienced some difficulties. For one thing, there were few roads or schools available within its limits so that newcomers had to travel long distances to get to their new hometowns. However, due to its growing popularity as a settlement and its role as an important transportation hub, Manhattan quickly became self-sufficient and developed strong economic ties with other municipalities withinKansas City area
The Manhattan, Kansas community started out as a small town on the banks of the Missouri River. By 1881, it had grown to include over 1,000 people. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1854 as a military post on the edge of what is now Wichita County. In 1872, the United States Congress designated Manhattan an official seat for Shawnee County and in 1876, it became one of four counties in Kansas created from parts of Indian Territory. In 1907, Manhattan's school district was merged with another in Topeka to create the Wichita-Manhattan School District. The merger created a more unified community and helped to promote education within the town. In 1915, the first high school in Manhattan opened and continues to serve students today. In addition to its educational institutions, Manhattan has also been home to several businesses and industries over the years including a paper mill (1875), agriculture (1910), automobiles (1924), meatpacking (1945), and printing services (1966).
