Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Manhattan is located on the edge of the Saline Valley and is bordered by Republican Township to the north, Garden City to the east, and American Fork to the south. The first settler in what is now Manhattan was James Pumphrey who founded a cabin in 1854. In 1860, John Davenport became one of the first settlers in what would become Manhattan. Davenport named his community after his old home city of Manchester England which he had visited while living there as an exile from Kentucky. In 1868, a post office was established at Manhattan and mail service began operations that year. By 1870, there were over 20 residents in Manhattan including six teachers and nine farmers. By 1880, there were over 50 residents and 12 businesses in downtown Manhattan including four grocery stores and six breweries. In 1910 following passage of legislation providing for statehood for Kansas all settlements within commuting distance of Topeka were annexed into new Topeka County with boundaries that included most of present-day Haskell County except for what is now Manhattan which was annexed into Wichita County Manhattan experienced significant growth during World War II with many locals making their homes within easy reach of military installations such as Topeka Army Ammunition Plant (TAP) on Cannery Row near downtown Topeka or Wichita Falls Air Force Base (FGAB) on Industrial Avenue just east of town . After hostilities ended1945 much like other postwar rural America numerous small towns throughout Kansas lost their resident populations due both to death from war-related causes/injury/exile or relocation as a result of deindustrialization schemes initiated by newly elected President Harry Truman . However by 1950 only two buildings remaining from original settlement had been occupied since then slowly but surely more longtime inhabitants moved out until today very few remain inside core boundaries commonly thought to have originated with establishment date 1850
