The first school taught grades one through twelve at an shanty on Mud Creek east of present day downtown Manhattan which served as both headquarters for missionary work throughout Sedgwick County and also as a place where children could be brought up if they were orphaned or abandoned within our county limits In 1907, when Sedgwick County became organized into two districts - one including all of Sedgwick County save part west of Manhattan and one including most of what is now Wichita - Broadway Street outside current day downtown Manhattan was chosen as the dividing line between those districts with Broadway becoming known locally as "the Divide". That year also saw the opening of the new courthouse on Main Street east of present day Broadway which served local needs until 1924 when that building was replaced by what is today's First UMC Church located just north on Main Street opposite where Presbyterianism began services in town back around 1850 It wasn't until 1959 that what are now Liberty University Campus buildings were built on land east of Broadway between Main and Richards Streets across from what used to be Dutch Reformed Zion Church before that name change took place In 1906 Methodist Episcopal Bishop Leland Sibley ordained married black couple Wilbur Hargrave (20) and Maybelle Fenton (21) to serve within his newly formed African Methodist Episcopal Zion congregation called "Ebenezer Baptist Congregationalist Church" located about 2 miles south east along US 84 near present day Harlem Road Mormon missionaries associated with EBENEZER BAPTIST CHURCH transported pregnant woman Cora Tanner (23) from Independence Missouri overland using wagons pulled by teamsters several days journey starting late Thursday night October 8th 1881 en route from Jefferson City MO reaching Dodge City KS safe but did not reachpresent day Manhattan due to weather conditions
