Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Manhattan is located on the Republican River. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Manhattan has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa". The first permanent settler in what would become Manhattan was John Tilton in 1854. In 1868, Phebe Finney and her husband Haskell built a cabin on an island in the river near where they now live. That same year, another couple, Elijah Moody and his wife Sarah moved into a log cabin on the east side of the river. In 1870s two more families arrived: John Fenton and his family and James Bogue with his family from western Missouri. In 1876-77 Arent Fenton bought land northeast of town along the Republican River for $2 per acre (about $ today). He founded New York City Land Company which developed it into one of Wichita's most successful agricultural ventures during that period. In 1886 Milton Sperry opened an American Express office near present day Main Street and US Highway 6 south of town; this became one of Wichita's earliest business enterprises. By 1910 there were only about 10 residents living in downtown Manhattan; by 1930 there were just six residents remaining within its boundaries when it merged with nearby Roughneck to form Roughneck & Manhattan Incorporated as part of Wichita Mills Corporation (later Wichita Industries). From 1932 until its closure in 1984 as part of IAC corporation no manufacturing took place within or adjacent to downtown Manhattan but all economic activity centered around Hutchinson Industrial Park located just outside its borders southeast of present day Main Street/US Highway 6 across from Hutchinson Elementary School until that park's closing also devastatingly eliminate much economic activity within city limits due to commuting distance required for jobs outside city limits while still maintaining access to many essential city services including public transportation provided by Wichita Regional Transit Authority buses which run directly through downtown onto I-35W passing under Main Street then continuing directly north past I-35W past current day Hutchinson Elementary School before terminating at Union Pacific Railroad tracks just inside city limits); however some light retailing did take place such as Dollar General Store operated by Rich Haggerty from 1978 until he closed it down in 2017 after numerous complaints about poor service especially regarding heating temperatures during their time as well as unsolicited orders being placed without any notice or potential consequences such as items not arriving even though ordered) - note store hours are typically 9am-6pm EST Mondays- Saturdays

After the war ended, business slowly resumed but growth slowed again until 2000 when new drilling techniques led to increased production at nearby Anadarko Oilfield and more people decided to move into Manhattan for jobs. Manhattan, Kansas was founded on November 1, 1854 by Captain James W. Marshall and his family. The city of Manhattan was named for the Dutch town of Manhatten (now Amsterdam), which had been the site of a French trading post from 1624 to 1638. The first settler in what is now Manhattan was Isaac Cady, who arrived in 1846. The city growth continued as other settlers arrived, and by 1860 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, the city became part of the United States after Mexico ceded its southern border to America. The City Council adopted a resolution on October 9, 1865 calling for the creation of an agricultural school in Manhattan so that farmers could be trained to grow crops there. It was not until 1870 that an Agricultural School opened at 510 Main Street and served as the nucleus for what would become Kansas State University (later Wichita State University). In 1887, New York City seceded from America and formed its own country called Dixie; however, Manhattan retained its status as a U.S.City until 1907 when it became part of Kansas Territory following statehood for Kansas. As part of this process, local government functions were transferred from New York to Kansascity under the jurisdiction of Territorial Governor John Hennepin; however these functions were later moved back under state control when Kansas became an American state in 1907-08
