Manhattan, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 5,542 at the 2010 census. Manhattan is part of the Topeka–Aldine, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Manhattan was Captain John Smith on his expedition in 1608. He named it after his hometown of London, England. The area that includes present-day Manhattan was part of Shawnee County until 1824 when it became part of Wichita County. In 1907, construction began on the Hutchinson–Kansas State Railway which connected Topeka with Lawrence and other cities in Kansas and Nebraska. The railway helped create a boom in farming in central Kansas during the early 20th century; however, railroad development led to abandonment and decline for much of the community during this time. In 1976, Union Pacific Railroad donated land to form a park that would include a museum about railroad history and operations; today's museum opened in 2009. In 1932, an act by Governor James Ewing designated what are now downtown Manhattan as "the capital city" for all of central Kansas (though Topeka continued to be its primary city). This designation changed little over the next few decades; although there were occasional legislative sessions held at various locations throughout downtown Manhattan (such as the Republican state convention), most business transactions took place at either Topeka or Wichita Federal Courthouse across Main Street from City Hall Plaza which served as both government and commercial center until demolition began in 1966 to make way for Interstate 70/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard widening project.

Manhattan is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, on the Great Plains about 140 miles (220 km) east of Wichita and 120 miles (193 km) north of Topeka. The population was 3,971 at the 2010 census. Manhattan was founded in 1854 by Major John Smedley as a small post on the Santa Fe Trail between Wichita and Clearwater, Texas Territory. In 1868, it became part of Dodge City County and in 1907 it became a part of Ottawa County. The first settler in Manhattan was Jens Jensen who built his cabin on what is now Main Street in 1854. As settler numbers increased, so did development around the town; businesses grew up around transportation links such as an toll road to Topeka and Waco, and new services were developed including medical care, banking, education and other commercial activities which helped to make Manhattan one of the most active towns on the Great Plains during its early years. When Dodge City County was created from parts of Ottawa County in 1907, Manhattan lost much of its economic significance but regained some when land acquired from Wichita for an expressway bypassed downtown; later that year it annexes portions of Haskell County adjacent to its eastern edge creating what is currently known as Eddyville within its boundaries. By 1930s many residents had relocated away from central business district due to pollution problems caused by industries located there like oil refineries then being built nearby; however Macklinore Oil Refinery still stands today just outside downtown Omaha KS as a reminder of this time period while other businesses have since been replaced by more recent ones such as Walmart or KFC which are still present within their original buildings although modernized with updated zoning laws
On July 15, 1854, Manhattan was founded by developer James M. Watt as a town in Leavenworth County, Kansas. The city grew quickly and soon became the most populous settlement in the area. In 1865, Manhattan became part of the new state of Kansas when it was organized from parts of Texas and New Mexico. In 1907, Kansas voters passed a referendum to annex all of Roosevelt County including Manhattan. The city continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it declined due to the impact of the war on the economy. However, after the war, slow growth resumed and in 1960, Manhattan voted to become an independent city.
