Manhattan, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 907 at the 2010 census. It has the name of the largest city in Manhattan Township and is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Manhattan were farmers who came up from central Illinois in 1855. They named their community after the then-largest city in New York City, Manhattan. In 1866, one of the first banks in Manhattan was opened by J.B. Payne and others from Wichita. By 1870, there were eighteen businesses in downtown Manhattan alone; by 1880 there were over fifty companies doing business there including eleven banks and twelve grocery stores In 1886, a post office was established at what is now called Eastman Square (now home to First National Bank) and mail service was started between Wichita and Manhattan In 1898, two small towns - Haskell and Garden City - were combined into a new township called Sedgwick County for economic reasons In 1902, when Wichita became an independent city it annexed much of east Sedgwick County including parts of which are now known as east Harlem (northwest corner of Haskell parish), west Park Heights (southwest corner of Garden City parish), north Liberty (east side of Sedgwick county line), and northwest Topeka (just south of present day Broadway Junction). At that time downtown Wichita had only six businesses while east Harlem had twenty-six "It would be impossible," stated one historian about annexing all these small towns "to list them all here". However annexation did help consolidate many small businesses into one largerestablishment which helped create more jobs for locals As Wichita grew moreself-sufficient it began to lose some key employees to other cities such as Topeka or Kansas City so it needed to find ways to keep its citizens engaged with their local government . One solution was creating an elected Board Of Education which would manage public schools within town limits instead of having individual parents run each schoolhouse There also existed early on a boardwalk/promenade alongside Main Street which functioned as a civic center for residents

Manhattan, Kansas is a town in McLean County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Manhattan was founded in 1867 by George Washington Downing and his family as a small ranch on the east bank of the Arkansas River. In 1868, Downing and five other settlers petitioned to become part of Wichita when that city was founded. They were denied because their ranch land included what is now Manhattan. In 1870, two large ranches were bought by Jno. Hoggs and Wm. Prentice and moved to what is now Kiowa County, Oklahoma Territory; they became known as Hoggs Ranches #1 & #2 (now Guthrie). In 1872, another group of seven settlers petitioned to become part of Wichita again but this time they were accepted because their land did not include what is now Manhattan. In 1875-76, three more families joined the original seven settlers: Henry Capps (1875), John Fenton (1877), and Augustus Stroud (1879). The first school in Manhattan was built in 1878 by Mrs. Beecham Lewis with funds from her husband Drury Lewis; it was called "The Indian School". In 1902-03, Harry Sennett established Sennett's Meatpacking Company on Broadway near current day Market Street in downtown Wichita; he named it after his business mentor Charles Ewing Sennett who had helped establish Omaha Beef Packers packing company there earlier that year also adjacent to Market Street]. On October 3rd 1903 Mayor James Buchanan designated Broadway between Sycamore Avenue and Main Street as "Manhattan Boulevard" in honor of Harry Sennett's contribution thereto] In 1907-08 an addition located just west of Main Street north of Sycamore Avenue served as home for the new Central High School which replaced McKnight High School which had been destroyed during a tornado on May 2nd 1907]. Central High School remained operational until 1961 when it merged with Douglas Junior College [nowDouglas Community College] to form Central University which then functions as our present day high school] ]. On December 20th 1908 formal dedication ceremonies took place for newly completed Second Presbyterian Church located at 4th and Elm Streets south side of town], centered around Revd Ault's sermon entitled "Pioneers' Dilemma: How Do We Go Forward?". Reverend Ault later served as pastor from 1912 until his death in 1932.] ] ]

The first white person to live in Manhattan was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who arrived in 1784. The first store on West 23rd Street was opened by John Jacob Astor in 1824. In 1848, Manhattan was incorporated as a city.
