However, most of these businesses were destroyed in 1945 when Japan bombed Hiroshima; Manhattan does not have any surviving buildings from those times. In 1960, after more than 50 years of decline, real estate prices started rising in Manhattan due to development along Interstate 35W; this encouraged migration from rural areas towards the city center where prices were much higher. This growth led to increased traffic congestion and pollution which has taken their toll on health since the late 20th century; however recent efforts by Mayor Bloomberg have improved conditions somewhat.
