Bullets in Manhattan, Kansas have been a part of the community since at least 1868. That year, three men from Hutchinson County brought a rifle and ammunition to the town of Manhattan. They were motivated by an event that had taken place two years earlier in Wichita, Kansas. A group of men who were called the “Wild West Volunteers” had invaded Wichita and committed mass murder. The event served as inspiration for the men from Hutchinson County to start their own militia to protect themselves and their community. From this act of aggression, the townspeople decided that they needed bullets too. Bullet production quickly began in 1861, with Walter Ranson Sr., one of the founders of Manhattan,Kansas doing most of the work himself. By 1865, bullet production was complete and bullets were being used throughout Kansas Territory. The state of Kansas was created in 1854 from the portion of Nebraska that had been won by the Ulysses S. Grant campaign as part of the Missouri Compromise. The area now included Manhattan, which had been a small farming community since at least the 1840s. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he decided to make Manhattan an important military reservation on the Great Plains for soldiers Used to garrison western outposts and protect settlers from Native American raiders. Lincoln also made it clear that he intended to move the capital from Washington D.C., where there was no room for a new building and too many distractions for federal officials, to Kansas City, which would be nearer to both the national capital and major railroad lines. In 1862, following completion of construction on what is now Independence Park in downtown Manhattan, Lincoln announced his intention to move the capital back eastward into Kansas City so that "the people of these three cities may have one central point whence they may look with pride upon their country." Lincoln's choice was not well received by all in Kansas City who saw themselves as having been left behind while their eastern neighbor grew wealthier and more powerful. A series of civil rights protests led to violence throughout much of 1863 and 1864 as protesters attempted to force Lincoln's relocation back eastward. When Lincoln finally moved thecapital back eastward after several years of planning and struggle in early 1865, much protest remained despite assurances by outgoing Governor John Armstrong that all city residents were given land near Prospect Lake so they could build homes without fear of eviction or displacement. Although most residents were able to find jobs moving forward, some found themselves unable or unwilling to leave their homes during this time period due largely to economic reasons: many farmers were unable or unwillingto shift cultivation away from degraded soil; businesses were closed because transportation costs became prohibitively expensive; and few citizens could afford new homes in an economy that had begun degrading quickly from high levels of population density caused by cheap land availability (and also encouraged by government policies such as opening up Indian Territory). Kansas City proper only began becoming populated again starting in around 1900 after streetcars arrived providing faster access than wagons between downtown KC and rural areas; however, even then most residents still lived within walking distance of work or school rather than outside town limits. Today downtown KC is home mainly to professional users (lawyers, bankers etc.), tourists/migrants looking for interesting architecture/townlife etc., museums (especially art galleries) & historical buildings dating back centuries (elevated train stations like Topeka & Lawrence are popular tourist destinations), Inner-city housing projects & low-income neighborhoods adjoining business districts while suburban areas retain a mixof single family dwellings with attached garages & sheds used for agricultural purposes only (& occasional visits from passing trains).
